When you’re your own boss, sometimes being productive can be a challenge.
We get distracted or put other things in front of business-building activities. I don’t know about you, but there has been a few times where I have looked up and said, “Oh crap. I haven’t worked on my business in two weeks!”
This is not good. It’s not productive, and it doesn’t get anyone one inch closer to their goals.
So let’s break productivity down a bit, shall we?
The fundamentals of productivity are setting goals and maintaining energy and focus.

When you have a clear and challenging goal to strive for, you tend to be more focused and engaged, and ultimately more productive.
Think about you goals for a moment. Are they challenging? Are they clear? Do you know the steps (or small goals) you need to take to get to them?
If the answer is “no” –
stop reading right now, and get to work creating some clarity with where you want to go. Don’t just get laser focused on the goal you want to crush, but also get clear on the steps and/or path that will lead you to that big and challenging goal.
If the answer is “yes” –
then let’s talk about how to start being more productive right now, instead of wishing for the goal to come true. SUCCESS REQUIRES ACTION!
I want to share with you some of my productivity tricks/hacks that have helped me crush goals in my business all while raising kids, continuing to date my husband, living that healthy lifestyle, and all the other things that get piled on to my plate.
Tasks that Matter
Do you ever feel like you don’t have enough time or enough hours in the day? Have you ever thought to yourself, “man, if I just had a few more hours a day, I know my business would really take off…”
I know I have. I may have thought it more than 1000+ times in my first year of business. I had these big goals, and just couldn’t figure out how the ‘successful people’ fit it all in.
I remember my husband and I sitting in our living room asking each other, “Why aren’t we accomplishing anything?” We were a little discouraged.
All the mom and dad entrepreneurs reading this can totally feel me when I say there were days we felt like from the moment our eyes opened to the moment our eyes shut, we were moving. We were parenting, building a business, driving kids around all day, cooking, cleaning, working our other jobs, trying (and failing) to maintain a social life, and on and on and on.
So why weren’t we accomplishing what we wanted?
We were doing tasks or things that ultimately didn’t matter.
It’s true. Our days were filled. My planner was completely packed, and I was proud. I had tricked myself into thinking that busy = productivity. And that, my friends, is simply not true.
I had filled my planner (and our life) with tasks that didn’t get us any closer to our goals. Not one single inch. What were some things we were doing?
- Binge watching TV/Catching up on “our shows” after the kids went to sleep
- Cleaning/Organizing my desk
- Filling my calendar with events that didn’t serve my family or my business
- Wasting time on social media
When I realized how much time I was spending on things that didn’t serve my purpose, my family or my business, I quickly realized I DID have those hours in the day that I had wished for. I just wasn’t utilizing them like I should.
Take some time to reflect on the hours of your day. Can you eliminate tasks or habits that aren’t getting you closer to your goal(s)?
To do: Jot down 5 tasks that will get you to your goal FAST.
In Network Marketing the basic tasks for building your business are:
- Connect with/Talk to people
- Find out what they need/How your product/business can help
- Present them to your upline/sponsor
These are the tasks that matter. These are the tasks that will get you tangible results.
You don’t get paid to organize your desk. You don’t get paid to watch every episode of Game of Thrones. You don’t get paid to continually scroll on social media. Believe me, I learned this the hard way.
Your To-Do List
This one little secret has completely transformed my business and helped me be 1000% more productive.
Every night before I go to bed, I make my to-do list for the next day. Personally, I put everything on the list because I like to feel accomplished even if I’m crossing off something like “take the kids to school.”
My list usually consists of the following:
- reach out to 3 new people
- take the kids to school
- reconnect with 2-3 people
- homeschool my pre-k child
- do the dishes
- follow up
- personal development
- post on social media (not waste time)
Each day’s list includes the 5 tasks that get me closer to my goal, and I do not go to sleep until those have been accomplished.
Some days I get everything checked off by noon- other days I’m struggling to finish close to midnight. I have committed to myself that they get done – NO EXCEPTIONS.
The to-do list is a game changer for two reasons: it organizes your thoughts/gives you clear, daily direction, and it’s always there to come back to when you get distracted by the kids, life in general, social media, etc.
A Little Bit of Planning
My last secret is planning. A little bit of planning goes a long way!
Find a day of the week that works best for you to sit down and plan out the next week: your goals for the week, your appointments, your social media content, your calls, etc.
